2025 marked a significant milestone with the launch of the exclusive CORE Side Stream Magnetic Filter, which quickly earned recognition for its efficiency and innovative design. After many successful installations, industry interest grew rapidly, creating strong demand for larger options. In response, CORE introduced the Side Stream Filter Plus and the Side Stream Filter XL. Designed to deliver higher performance for demanding commercial and industrial applications.

To enhance the range further, CORE has also released the Full Flow Magnetic Filter, ideal for large heating systems and available in sizes from 2” to 3”. The filter is designed to prevent the build-up of ferrous oxide and scale within central heating systems, reducing energy bills, extending boiler life and reducing maintenance callouts. Utilising high-performance flow technology, the CORE filter removes unwanted debris from the system.

Recognition
Last year, the CORE Side Stream Magnetic Filter was nominated for multiple awards at various HVAC industry ceremonies. The product has been recognised for its innovative nature, its low carbon footprint, and for its successful involvement in the retrofit project at the University of Essex. CORE was also acknowledged for applying an adaptive approach to the product, making it more effective and user-friendly for the HVAC market.
The project received a highly commended award in the Retrofit and Reuse category at the British Construction Industry Awards (BCIA) for:
- Enhancing filtration
- Providing efficiency
- Improving system performance
- Increasing the heating and cooling system reliability
- Reducing maintenance costs
- Contributing to the University’s sustainability goals
Low carbon footprint
CORE Side Stream Filters are a BSRIA-compliant solution for commercial and industrial water heating systems, designed to remove magnetic and non-magnetic debris while maintaining system performance.
The filters place sustainability at the heart of their design, addressing multiple environmental and energy efficiency concerns across their lifecycle, including:
- Industry-leading magnetic core – Maximises ferrous capture. The straight-rod design enhances efficiency, enables easy cleaning, and eliminates finger-trap hazards.
- Reusable stainless steel mesh filter – Captures dirt without the need for disposable cartridge filters, potentially ending up in landfills.
- Non-blocking design – Ensures uninterrupted system flow even when not regularly cleaned. Removing the need for PD monitors, flow meters and pressure gauges.
- UK manufacturing – Guarantees high quality, faster delivery, and a reduced carbon footprint.
- Dosed with CORE Biocide – Eliminates bacterial growth and improves efficiency and long-term system reliability.
Adaptive approach
After the initial installation, CORE received monthly feedback from both installers and end users to assess the product’s effectiveness. The early trials’ real-time performance data were fed back, and the manufacturer implemented user-centric product adaptations, enhancing its reliability and functionality through practical improvements.
The adaptive approach led to adjustments to the filter, including:
- High temperature resistant fittings – Replacing the brass non-return valves with stainless steel to withstand high temperatures and pressure within the system.
- Additional isolating valve – To prevent spills, leaks containing harmful bacteria or splashback of hot liquids.
- 2 options for inlet and outlet – For ease of installation.
- Unions – Enabling isolation valve handles to be repositioned to suit the installation requirements.
Ongoing success
Pleased with the results and the product’s reconfiguration, the University of Essex commissioned the products for retrofitting across the 75 plant rooms on campus. This project has paved the way for subsequent projects, including Basildon Hospital and Cambridge University.
